Review Snippet

A search result enhancement that shows a star rating or short review excerpt, generated from Review or AggregateRating structured data.

Definition

A review snippet is a rich result feature in which Google displays a star rating, a numeric score, or a short excerpt from a review alongside a search listing. It is generated when a page includes valid Review or AggregateRating structured data for an eligible item.

Review snippets can appear for content types such as products, recipes, books, films, events, courses, software applications and local businesses, and the markup may stand alone or be nested inside another schema.org type. Google has stated that providing valid structured data makes a page eligible for the feature but does not guarantee it will be shown, and that the visual presentation can differ by device and content type. Self-serving reviews — for example, a business marking up reviews of itself on its own site — are not eligible.

Examples

  • Product page

An online retailer adds AggregateRating markup to a kettle product page. Its search listing then shows a 4.6-star rating drawn from customer reviews.

  • Recipe site

A recipe page marks up individual Review entries with author and rating. Google may display an averaged star rating in the recipe rich result.
