Ranking Signal

One of the many factors a search engine weighs when ordering results for a query, such as relevance, content quality, or usability.

Definition

A ranking signal is an individual factor that a search engine takes into account when deciding the order of results for a given query. Google has said relevance and ranking are determined by hundreds of such factors rather than any single one.

Google describes ranking as a programmatic process and has stated it does not accept payment to rank pages higher. The signals it references publicly include the meaning of a query, the relevance and quality of content, usability of the page, and context such as the searcher's location, language, and device. Google does not publish a definitive weighted list, and the influence of any one signal varies by query, so treating a single factor as decisive can be misleading.

Examples

  • Context-based signal

Two searchers entering the same query in different countries may see different result orders because location is one of the signals Google considers.

  • Page experience as a signal

Core Web Vitals contribute to how Google assesses page experience, which is one of many signals informing ranking.
